Review for Wounded Warrior Homes Inc, San Marcos, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Among the many non-profits that serve injured veterans, Wounded Warrior Homes, located in north San Diego County, is among the very few that offer a comprehensive and individualized program with room and board for up to two years for those post-911 vets that are homeless due to the effects of the "invisible injuries" of PTSD and/or TBI. Established almost 10 years ago by Mia and Steve Roseberry, WWHs has successfully transitioned many dozens of vets into successful civilian lives while also serving active and veteran families from WWH's food pantry. And this has been accomplished with a small but highly dedicated and efficient staff, keeping costs as low as possible due to the high cost of housing in San Diego County. Our funding depends heavily on donations, of course, but it should be noted that every dollar raised stays here in San Diego County. For these reasons and more, I am proud to be associated as a volunteer and Board member of Wounded Warrior Homes since 2014. Our injured veterans deserve nothing less.

In 1966, my first year of college, a guy in my design class had recently returned from Viet Nam. He was older than almost everyone in the class, maybe mid-20's. In our first semester it became clear that he was by far the best designer in our freshman class. But he was also extremely quiet. Being a military brat, I was interested in his military experience, which he told me in general terms was combat related. As the semester progressed he excelled but always kept us fellow design students at arm's length, never attending any parties, football games or joining in for pizza. A loner. When the second semester began and we returned from Xmas break, he was not in attendance. We never heard from him again. Years later I came to realize he was probably a victim of PTSD. And as I reflected back, I often wondered if he received assistance to overcome his issues and enjoy life as the talented designer that I remember him to be. Back then, of course, I doubt assistance was available. Today, thankfully that has changed. With Wounded Warrior Homes, I have found a highly effective program including housing for just that sort of veteran right here in North County. It has been my honor to assist them since 2014.

Raised as an Air Force brat, I can relate to the dedication of our military personnel. So when I retired from my civilian career I sought out ways to support our vets, and finding Wounded Warrior Homes in 2014, I became a volunteer. Since its founding not quite ten years ago by Mia and Steve Roseberry, this non-profit has successfully transitioned over 80 homeless post- 9/11 vets into successful civilian lives. We presently offer a private room and board in one of our three homes in North County. Just as importantly, the room comes with an individualized program for up to two years that is managed by our wonderful staff working with each of our resident vets to realize their goals beyond military life. Our highly dedicated staff is small in number and our maximum capacity is 13 vets in residence. But our waiting list can be as many 25 homeless vets. In short, the need is great, and Wounded Warrior Homes is presently working on an ambitious plan to provide more rooms. To realize that goal, we need your help. For more information, I ask that you take a look at our webpage. And join us in our mission as a volunteer and/or in your donations.

My dad was a career veteran with the US Air Force, so I was raised a Military Brat & understand the commitment of our military personnel & their families. Sadly, many of today's combat veterans do not cope well with injuries and for various reasons fall through the cracks when it comes to medical assistance after they have departed the service. Wounded Warrior Homes has stepped up to provide local homeless veterans afflicted with PTS & TBI with a roof over their heads and a personalized plan for healthcare, education and civilian career guidance for each resident. I am grateful to WWH's for providing me with an opportunity to help veterans in need, and honored to work with their dedicated volunteers and hard working staff members.
