My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for The American-Batticaloa Development Fund, Santa Monica, CA, USA
For two years I have donated money to partially cover operating costs. I like the focus of this group; they work closely with grassroots and community groups in Sri Lanka, and take on small projects that are ignored by the larger agencies, but are no less valuable to the people who benefit. So my donations allow them to concentrate on the projects, and worry a little less about the more mundane concerns. It costs only a little for them to function, and they are very careful with the money. I have a lot of confidence in this group.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
The number of useful projects they have completed with very little money is impressive. Given that, I imagine they could do a whole lot with just a little more money.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Encourage growth.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
They have been very good about keeping me informed about their work, about the people they are helping, and about Sri Lanka in general. It's be quite an education.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Everyone works for free, so I like the enthusiasm they have.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Help a whole lot of people who have lived through the 2004 tsunami and 25 years of civil war.
Ways to make it better...
I would like them to find more stable funds. Then some of my money could go to projects.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Money. They have a very small budget, which limits the work they can do.
One thing I'd also say is that...
It's nice to see a group of people take the time and energy to do this. It's easy to write a check like I do, but it is harder to put in the time and effort. From what I can tell they all have jobs, families, and lives outside the organization. And yet they do this work too, for free.
