Review for Isaiahs Place, Whitney, TX, USA
Isaiah's Place truly makes a difference in the lives of deaf of all ages and their families. The 40 acre facility provides a fantastic outdoor experience for members of the deaf community who, a lot of the time, come from metropolitan areas. The staff makes an ernest effort to reach families in rural areas who sometimes isolate themselves and let them know of the opportunities available to them. Isaiah's Place will even take programs to them. It is very family oriented with parents and siblings invited to most activities and learning experiences. If someone has a specific request to learn something, a concerted effort is made to provide that experience; flying remote controlled aircraft, golf lessons, quilting, riding a horse, etc. ASL classes are offered weekly which goes a long way toward making more hearing people comfortable within the deaf community. Retreats for parents raising a deaf child for the first time are provided on a regular basis. They have proven to be very helpful through speakers with hands on experience. The additional benefit is parents meeting others facing the same challenges. They go away with a lot more knowledge and information that has been helpful to others. I clearly remember the excitement in the eyes of deaf children meeting others that "are just like me!!" at the first young children's weekend retreat. They were instantly friends and are to this day. Isaiah's Place is a well run, professional organization with an active board of directors, many of which are deaf.
