The Gabriel House of Care didn't exist when I had my liver transplant in 2008. Traveling from Texas, my stay was at the Mayo Clinic Hospital before the end ransplant and my wife and mother stayed in a hotel 12 miles away from the Mayo campus. After the transplant, and I left the hospital, I stayed in the same extended stay hotel for a couple of months but had to travel to the campus almost daily.
It was a boring stay at the hotel. We met other people's at the hotel, but no real friendships. The monthly rate was not bad, but more than we could really afford without going into debt.
After the Gabriel House opened, my wife and I stay there every year for my week- long check-up. We make life friends on every visit! The staff is truly amazing. All of our needs are met. We are on the campus of the Mayo and can get there in just a few minutes. It is more than affordable. Enough so we are proud give them a generous donation every year.
Living with other transplant and cancer patients, they see my post transplant success, how well I am doing, and hopefully know they can have the same experience.
