My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for East Palo Alto Kids Foundation, Palo Alto, CA, USA
I have volunteered for EPAK in many capacities over the past 8 years. I have found the organization's board members and volunteers to be very committed to public education and promoting educational opportunities for students in this low-income area. Many are retired teachers who continue their amazing commitment to the kids and share their knowledge of the schools through volunteer work.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
literacy increased through classroom and leveled reading rooms, curriculum enhanced through field trip experiences that would otherwise not have happened, libraries reopened, teacher morale raised, etc.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Reading the hundreds of Thank You notes from the students and teachers testifying to how these resources are desperately needed, used and appreciated.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Very diverse in age, ethnicity, and background. Very committed to equalizing educational opportunity across zip codes.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Implement enrichment programs and provide opportunities in areas that have been cut or neglected (music, PE, science). With more individualized attention (especially for English Language Learners), students could better compete with those from public schools in neighboring, affluent areas.
Ways to make it better...
EPAK had more community volunteers (or paid staff) with specific skills. For example, EPAK needs a professional PR person to help spread the word, and a professional Fundraiser to help raise funds.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Connecting with affluent individuals who are committed to their mission.
