Review for Labrador Rescuers, San Diego, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

A year ago we adopted our 2nd dog from Labrador Rescuers, and I want to let everyone know what a wonderful job this rescue does in matching the dogs with the families. We found out the hard way not all rescues go to the trouble to assess their dogs thoroughly enough to place them in families where the adoption will be a success. Lab rescuers is not about the numbers, they are interested in happy endings for both the families and the dogs! When we contacted our volunteer at Lab Rescuers, she didn't think she had a dog that met our needs at the time. But anxious for a dog I was, so I went to their adoption event anyway, but it turns out she was right. She had known us since we got our first lab, and we talked at great length about what was great about that dog, and what went wrong with the other rescue group after our first passed away. Then she was able to keep her eye out and advocate for us when new dogs were coming into their rescue. And that's how we ended up with the current love of our lives, Piper. Although Piper was very timid of new people and dogs when she was first brought in, we put trust in their assessment of her that there was no aggression and that, although she might always be a shy dog, she was a bit freaked out by the whole shelter and transition happening to her. All that has come true.

The book Lab Rescuers provided as part of the adoption was wonderful. Even though we've had dogs before, each one has been different, and there were concrete things in this book that explained how Piper was adjusting that I wouldn't have otherwise known. It helped us learn how to be patient with her settling in, and lead us to other resources - books and trainers- that taught us how to build her confidence and become the wonderful dog that she is. She's still shy when she meets new people because that's just her temperament, but she is curious to meet everyone and quickly becomes their best friend. She's smart and sensitive, and perfect in the house (none of which we can take credit for!). With my husband and two teenage boys, she has a special relationship with each of us, and has definitely stolen our hearts forever.
