Review for Assistance League of Charlotte, CHARLOTTE, NC, USA
As a member volunteer who has been serving on the Board of Directors during 2009-2010, I have seen firsthand the hard work that is put into this organization to ensure that funds are raised to help clothe, feed, and mentor children in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools who would otherwise go without. Funds are primarily raised through our Thrift Shop and it is staffed by 100% volunteers. In 2008-2009, Operation School Bell clothed 1,590 children in 20 CMS elementary schools through the store, and an additional 44 children through school clothes closets and Community Link. Since 1995, Assistance League of Charlotte has clothed over 19,000 children. Assistance League provides snacks to nine Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary schools, feeding over 2,600 students daily. The Assistance League of Charlotte Scholarship Fund awarded 5 college scholarships in 2008-2009 at a total cost of $19,500. Over $157,000 in scholarship monies has been awarded since the program’s inception in 2002. Raising funds for these programs take many volunteer hours and would not be possible without the organizational skills of every one of the board members and program chairs. Our volunteers who accept donations for the Thrift Shop and get them ready to sell are invaluable. Volunteers who work in the store during opening hours are our unsung heroes because without them, we couldn’t keep the store open to raise the funds needed for our programs. It is so inspiring to see the results - a smile on a child’s face when they receive their “brand new” clothes. Feeling good about themselves give them the self-esteem to become better students.

Not enough member volunteers spreading the work load around instead of a few member volunteers doing most of the work and getting $ contributions.
