Review for MaleSurvivor: National Organization Against Male Sexual Victimization, New York, NY, USA
Malesurvivor.org is a good resource for men who want to connect with others to discuss and learn about their experience as victims of sexual assault. The forum discussions are quite helpful for this, and the "chat room" provides an opportunity to connect immediately.
The "Weekend of Recovery" events have excellent reviews from those who have attended. They are very expensive, but the organization has a program that assists those who request help in covering the fee.
Malesurvivor.org does suffer some flaws. The board of directors and executive positions consist of a small group of individuals who have served for years, highly qualified and respected professionals in the field. The organization's momentum has somewhat stagnated the past few years and would benefit from new perspectives among leadership.
Volunteer opportunities exist for unlicensed and untrained individuals to serve as moderators and related positions for the website community. As with all nonprofits, this type of hierarchy has opened the door for the occasional territorial individual to work into a position of authority over other volunteers, discouraging the participation of those they may perceive as a threat. The "chat room" and "healing circle" features are a point of concern, as these are headed by volunteers lacking in leadership and community-building skills. Although it takes only one or two of these folks to mar a good thing, malesurvivor.org has enough good people to keep the ship on course.
Considering these few weaknesses (which, again, are common to every nonprofit driven by unprofessional volunteers), malesurvivor.org is one of the most popular programs for men who are victims of sexual assault and has made a notable contribution in raising awareness of this issue.
