My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for FARMER FOODSHARE INC, Durham, NC, USA
I'm an undergraduate at UNC Chapel Hill, and I've volunteered with Farmer Foodshare for the past three years. I love this organization because of how much good they have done with a relatively simple mission: connect people who grow food with people who need food.
Farmer Foodshare seeks to alleviate hunger in North Carolina by supplying partner non-profit agencies like food pantries with fresh produce - produce sourced from small, local farmers who are fairly compensated for their crops.
This is accomplished in several ways. At over 30 farmer's markets around the state, "Donation Stations" are set up and staffed by Farmer Foodshare volunteers. Shoppers can donate cash, all of which is spent buying food at that market, or drop off produce they have selected. The food is then distributed immediately after market to the partner agency.
More recently, Farmer Foodshare has expanded their "Pennies on the Pound Market," which buys excess produce that farmer's wouldn't have otherwise been able to sell at market, and re-selling it to hunger relief organizations at the lowest possible price.
I always look forward to working Saturday mornings at the Carrboro Farmer's Market donation station, its relaxing and fun and you feel like you've made a real change by the end of the shift.
This is an excellent organization, and I recommend anyone interested hunger relief or sustainable food production to get involved.
