I participated in the Oman excursion, spending a week on a dhow (beautiful Omani boat) around the northern peninsula near Musandam. We were briefed on data collection and species recognition of fish, invertebrates and corals with the purpose of longer-term measurement and evaluation of the health of the biodiversity in the region.
One of the most beautiful parts of the world that I have ever visited, with a people that a very welcoming, kind and generous. Matthias (founder), Catherine (expedition leader) and Jean-Luc (scientist) were all absolutely incredible. Each with a deep passion for their work and particularly personable, helpful and astoundingly knowledgeable. I vastly increased my knowledge of taxonomy and governance of protected areas and it was clear that our work was making a difference.
I cannot recommend this experience enough, you will be certain to make many new friends with the team, volunteers, fish, invertebrates, corals, Omanis and skippers of the boat!
Just a quick extra point, there were sleeping quarters on the boat but in fact every night was spent on the deck, under a magnificent starry sky, what is not to like...
