I've been a volunteer somewhere for somebody all my life. I've worked with various volunteer organisations, but have a special fondness for Biosphere Expeditions. I used Biosphere Expeditions and Earthwatch Institute to fund and collect data for my PhD on parrots of the Peruvian Amazon. Clearly, Biosphere Expeditions targets a specific niche of the volunteer market spectrum, but they are very good (the best?) in what they do. As a scientist, I am particularly fond of the citizen science model which bridges the gap between science and 'regular' folk. I highly recommend the Biosphere Expeditions experience: its good for everyone and the wildlife that gets the attention.
