Buffalo
Review for Buffalo Field Campaign, West Yellowstone, MT, USA
This was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Every day we woke before sunrise, put on skis, and went out onto the buffalo's habitat. While most days were absolutely perfect--watching buffalo, elk, and wolves in their natural grace--other days were absolutely horrible as Montana livestock agents came out with helicopters and snowmobiles and disrupted the entire ecosystem. I watched and videotaped as they chased buffalo right through barbed-wire fences and into traps, from where they were loaded onto trucks and sent to slaughter houses. While I was there we also made several trips to the state Capital in Helena, where we testified in support of the buffalo. It was a great way to take some of what i learned in the field, fueled by the passion of how I saw them treating the buffalo, and use it to help change the policy under which the buffalo are mistreated.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
my level of knowledge on this important issue--both from my time in the field volunteering for patrols and as a recipient of BFC's weekly emails, which keep me up-to-date on the bison's struggle and let me know when there are actions I can take from home.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Buffalo Field Campaign is very grassroots. They have no fancy offices or large salaries and their work is fueled by their passion for the buffalo and their habitat. This comes across in everything they do. It was very easy to get engaged in the issue.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
While I was there there were about 13 staff members and 20+ volunteers. All were very friendly and helpful, though at first it was difficult to connect with the staff members because they were so busy.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Change state and federal policy to give the buffalo more room to roam. Purchase key buffalo habitat in the Yellowstone ecosystem where the buffalo could carry out their migration in peace.
