Review for History Fort Lauderdale, Ft Lauderdale, FL, USA
As a member of the Rio Vista Civic Association Board and contributor to our bimonthly magazine, I have needed information on many historical topics; research on the history of the development of Rio Vista, the 1926 hurricane, Virginia Shuman Young, Mayor and Educator, etc., While I was poking around the FL Historical Society for such information I was astounded to find a multitude of information on those topics and many others, like the city phone book from 1947 that listed the phone number of my family home. The staff took the time to help in my research and find a spot in the corner of the library for me to work while I spread out the files across several tables. Included in the staff's suggestion was access to hundreds of B & W photographs of our small city after the hurricane which provided the image for the magazine cover.
Without access to these archives, many of which are almost 100 years old, I would not have been able to tell the story of how our city survived that disaster or that Virginia, besides being our city's first and only female Mayor, a School Board Member for over 20 years was a fine shot with a pistol.
