Review for Lower Rio Grande Valley Nature Center, Weslaco, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

While volunteering at the nature center I learned a great deal of information concerning the native animals such as the Indigo snake, Mexican Milksnake and the Texas Tortoise as well as the native plants and the birds and insects they attract. They have a great education program that allows kids of all ages to enjoy the beautiful environment that surrounds us while learning on how to take care of the animals that inhabit those areas. I am no longer scared of snakes because I would have to take care of the snakes they have there by cleaning there tanks and feeding them and make sure they are happy in their setting. I would also help with bird counts, education festivals and presentations at local schools. I have learned so much about my native environment all thanks to the nature center. I am currently still helping them out with field trips and school events. Having fun while learning.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the education program because they teach you about our native animals and how you have to take care of them while giving a live animal show so you see how these animals are and know they have feelings too.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

get more animals. They do have quite a few but i would love to see a wild cat or something of that sort there.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

they love to teach you!! You ask them a question and if they don't know the answer they call someone who does.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

the nicest people I have ever met. It's like a big family that you never knew you had.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

it would use it to make its education building bigger because it is literally falling apart and it has a river flowing through it when it rains, it is also really small to fit all the people that come visit the center. Plus the animals need more room!

Ways to make it better...

there were less cockroaches and rats in the storage room from all the holes in the wall.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the money problems. They have the plans to remodel the center but no money. The city kept cutting there budget for other uses in the city. So they have been getting donations and sponsors.

One thing I'd also say is that...

If you've never been there you should visit. It is a great learning experience and it is located in the heart of the city where there is a diversity of birds and wildlife.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
