Review for Camp Barnabas, Springfield, MO, USA
This camp is so much more than a 'summer camp' for kids with special needs. My son with DS has been to camp & loves being able to spend time with 'kids like him.' At this camp, the focus is on everything our kids CAN do, not their limitations. It is empowering for the campers.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My son's increased confidence and the wonderful people he's met at camp & formed relationships with - campers & staff/volunteers alike.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Create a mentor-type program for families new to Camp Barnabas, even if it is just somebody who will be able to answer questions by phone. It is often a HUGE step to leave your special needs child - having a person who knows the ropes would be comforting
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the relationships forged with other campers & staff.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
wonderful and caring. They bend over backwards for the needs of the campers so that the campers can experience every part of camp - there is nothing a campers CAN'T do if they want to because of the staff/volunteers.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
expand to other locations to accommodate more campers.
Ways to make it better...
The first time camper (or really their family) almost needs a mentor family to help them understand how camp works, everything from drop off to cabin life to pick up. It's always good to have somebody you can ask questions of.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
accommodating the number of children who would benefit from this camp - only so many weeks of camp and so much room to house the campers/staff.
One thing I'd also say is that...
Camp Barnabas is a truly magical place, not only for campers but also siblings (I have 2 children that have attended sibling sessions) and parents.
