Review for West Michigan Environmental Action Council Education Foundation, Grand Rapids, MI, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Under the leadership of Executive Director Rachel Hood, West Michigan Environmental Action Council has begun to take a leadership role in the environmental community in Michigan. Rachel has made the organization stronger financially, and has been able to add two staff positions this year. The new Communications and Member Services position allows us to more effectively communicate and mobilize our membership, while the Policy and Community Activism position will allow us to promote environmentally friendly policies on the local, state, and national level. WMEAC has hired two fine and talented individuals to fill the new positions.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Among other things, WMEAC has helped protect local parks. WMEAC is lobbying to protect, preserve, and enhance our local watersheds, and recently removed 15,700 lbs of trash from the Grand River. WMEAC is lobbying for more oversite of our pipelines after Enbridge spilled almost 1 million gallons of oil into the Grand River.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase the funding. In Michigan, regulatory bodies are being defunded, and our environmental protections are in danger. The more funding we have, the more we can mobilize those who care about our state and our environment.

Role:  Board Member & I have participated in many WMEAC events.

Review for Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, Grand Rapids, MI, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Friends of Grand Rapids Parks are bringing a new focus to our parks system, which has been chronically underfunded over the last decade. They have organized Park Cleanup days and have organized volunteer groups in our parks, both of which have been difficult tasks for our parks department, due to extensive staff cuts. The Friends have also been working towards more aggressive and long term solutions to our park funding, programming, development and acquisition issues. Further, they have been proponents of integrating our parks into our community life.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my role as the Chair of the Parks and Recreation Board and as a citizen and lover of parks.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I led the park cleanup at my local park last year, and it was really a joy to make an improvement.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

brilliant, thoughtful, well spoken, and pleasant.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

completely transform our city! Grand Rapids, City of Parks! With $10 million, the Friends could really push the issue of appropriate funding levels and ensure a long term, sustainable funding model for our city and county.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2010

Role:  Client Served & Chair of the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
