The first time I realized that fistulas were a widespread and treatable problem for women in Africa was in reading Cutting for Stone. Then I saw Nicholas Kristoff's article on this issue and the work of the Fistula Foundation. I researched and found that this organization makes good use of its donations and I've been a donor ever since. The medical challenges of this effort are large, and this organization and the staff that serves it are nothing less than heroic. Even small contributions help to make a huge difference in someone's life.
