Volunteering with Save the Whales has opened my eyes to a world that could potentially be lost to us forever unless; we begin to take a stand for those who do not have a voice. Working with Maris Sidenstecker and Tom Kieckhefer has taught me that passion is everything!

I am a recent graduate (2014-15) from CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB) with a degree in Environmental Studies and a focus in Sustainable Communities. For the last year I worked with Save the Whales (non-profit organization) to coordinate and organize fundraising events and alone accumulated over $500. I partnered with Save the Whales to educate the general public during community events about pollution prevention, and how their efforts can play a role in protecting and saving the Vaquita. Save the Whales uses petitions and the signing of letters to the president of Mexico, asking him to do all he can to save the Vaquita. Reflecting on my experiences during service learning, I felt excited and moved by the adults and children getting involved in our Save the Whales’ booths. Seeing the reactions of both the adults and children when they learned that there are only 97 Vaquita left on the planet caused them to immediately sign the letter to the president of Mexico. This made me think about all the support we could easily gain if the general public were aware of the current injustices. I also believe in putting up pet waste emblems in local parks, and community storm drain stenciling to remind the public to do their part to help protect the oceans and the environment is essential.

Thank you Save the Whales for all that you have done for our oceans. I can rest assured knowing we are in good hands! I look forward to joining forces. My perfect world is a place where no animal is endangered or could become extinct because they have been exploited by human activities.
