Review for Best Day Foundation, Chesapeake, VA, USA
I was at the beach earlier this summer. Two teenaged boys were standing in the shallow surf, talking about their favorite sports. The taller of the boys said his favorite sport was surfing, and the other agreed. Then the taller boy headed out on a board to ride the waves. Totally typical interaction, except for one thing. The surfer was an adolescent with cognitive disabilities, and his buddy was just your average teen with an extraordinarily big heart. Best Day made it possible for both boys to experience something they wouldn't have otherwise, because chances are, they would not have run across one another in school or in their social circles. Beyond the fun of surfing, paddleboarding, body boarding, or skiing and sledding, those types of interactions are what Best Day is all about.
At a Best day event, youth with disabilities get to enjoy the types of beach and snow experiences that typically developing individuals sometimes take for granted. Volunteers who love outdoor activities get to share that love with people who otherwise face barriers to participating. It is safe, warm, and inviting. Nobody talks about doctors or procedures or school struggles...it's just the best day ever. The very, very Best Day.
