Review for Hillhouse Opera Company, New Haven, CT, USA
I sang in three productions, and helped with production in a variety of capacities. I feel that singing roles with the company gave me a lot of experience as an artist (I am a young soprano, and there's a lot of competition out there!. Doing backstage work helped me pick up some valuable skills that I have been able to apply to other activities. Hillhouse has certainly helped me grow as an artist and a person.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the ability to start out with nothing and make a fun and enjoyable show. There's usually very small budget, yet people come out with some amazing work.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
finding out I could do things I never thought I could. I was especially proud of the scene I directed in last year's show. I was given the freedom to do a piece I felt strongly about, and the singers put 110% into the interpretation.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Dedication at all levels. The chorus in particular is made up of really fantastic community members with positive energy.
Ways to make it better...
There was a little more money in the budget. Although we seem to make do with very little, it would help to be able to rent more suitable performing spaces for the productions.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
the lack of really good spaces for an affordable price in our location, both for rehearsal and performance.
