Review for A Ban Against Neglect Inc., Carrboro, NC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

ABAN is an absolutely wonderful global organization that I am delighted to work with as a member of the Board of Directors. My support flows from my admiration of the three young people who created this organization as college students. They observed two twin areas of neglect- environmental waste and marginalized street girls and decided to do something about it. They combined great compassion and shrewd business acumen and created a nonprofit that six years later provides life skills and business skills training to single mothers while simultaneously recycling sanitized plastic waste into a full line of beautiful and practical products that are sold on line and in stores. The original founders have recruited a talented team of young US and Ghanians college graduates and interns to continue to build the organization. These young adults are so inspiring. I am encouraged to find young people who have many options coming out of college who have chosen to serve others. They deserve support. What they have done is bold and uncommon. This has been recognized by a broad swath of private donors, academic recognition and corporate support.

Millions of girls and women in developing countries face enormous challenge in securing education and status. Their empowerment will be a major global challenge for decades. While ABAN does not have the influence of the Gates Foundation or the Clinton Foundation to impact the lives of millions---it does have the capacity to impact the lives of hundreds through employment in it's community economic enterprise and empowerment programs for Mothers and their children. It has the opportunity to be model of excellence in Ghana and West Africa. It can do this- it should do this and I am confident it will do this.
