Review for Center for the Arts of Homer Inc, Homer, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Launching the Center, much like democracy, can be a messy and time-gulping preoccupation. But those of us in the whirlwind of policy-making, planning, dreaming (and, yes, sweeping the floors and taking out the trash) can stand amazed at what has been accomplished by so many volunteers in such a short period of time. In an economic climate during which we see the fall of many beloved arts institutions, the Center for the Arts has been able to schedule a mortgage burning party. We have had artists clamor to come back to us. We have had some of the world's premier performers tell us that there is nothing like a Center audience: the sound system, the intimate space, the warmth of the reception. Whoever suggested our first official slogan, "Dream...then make it happen," could not have envisioned the growth and the diversity of activities housed under our roof. Kudos to all who have made it happen and continue to make it happen for the enrichment of our children and our children's children.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

planning the Paul Yaman First Steps Play Reading Series, thereby developing drafts of several scripts from budding playwrights.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to build a broader base of volunteers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being able to use not only my creative but my managerial skills, and especially being able to be part of something bigger than myself. Sense of community!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

warm, knowledgeable, helpful, creative, and committed.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

safely preserve the historic and architectural gems of our facility (stained glass windows, brick pointing) and launch even more audacious programming for the future.

Ways to make it better...

can continue to build a broader base of volunteers.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

burnout of volunteers and the local economy.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the Center has attracted faraway fans via online sources who have brought their travel and tourism dollars to Central New York. Our proudest accomplishment remains that no two audiences are the same and we don't draw on the "same old, same old" folks.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
