A few years back, I was involved in the rescue of a small bear who was not only very sick and malnourished, but was also at risk of being killed by her owner because he could no longer keep her in his house. A group of us managed to acquire the bear from the owner and we set out to find a place that could take care of her. Enter Peace River (Forest Animal Rescue) and Lisa... I've never been to Peace River and I've never met Lisa in person. It's comforting to read the reviews from the people who have volunteered there. You can only tell so much from pictures, so it's nice to read first-hand accounts of how nice the place is and how well the animals are treated. I try to donate a bit out of every paycheck in honor of the bear I played a part in rescuing. I don't donate very much, but I donate often (as long as I'm working; being a contractor, my work isn't steady). Lisa always sends a personal 'thank you' email (which is always nice, but not required). After taking in Lizzie (the bear), Lisa and her staff got her the medical attention and nutrition she needed. It wasn't long before she was a healthy, happy bear. Now, a few years later, she's HUGE. I'm always thrilled to see pictures of Lizzie and I do hope to be able to visit her in person one day. That will be a highlight of my life, I'm sure. I've never met her (I was a financial resource in her rescue), but I love that bear.
