Review for Amman Imman Water is Life, Inc., Silver Spring, MD, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've been volunteering for Amman Imman since 2010. Since its inception in 2006, Amman Imman has created several "oases of life" in Azawak Valley of West Africa through the provision of more permanent and healthier sources of water and opportunities to improve and sustain the well-being of locals.

As an economic development specialist, I praise Amman Imman's staff for their thoughtful approach relative to providing humanitarian aid and to implementing projects that aim to rehabilitate economically depressed indigenous communities in West Africa. The organization's top concerns of having locals directly involved in their own development and of preserving their cultural heritage are things that go far beyond what many other similar nonprofits do in different parts of the world. Although some people in the nonprofit field can consider it a time-consuming approach, it is worth pursuing because it represents the true aspirations of locals and their commitment to improve their own places, something that is ultimately more sustainable.

It is important to remember that Amman Imman also serves as a conduit between more economically advanced societies and indigenous peoples, especially those in developing countries. By working more closely together with schools, students and their families, Amman Imman has had a chance to educate the youth around the world about the devastating effects of climate change on indigenous populations and their cultures. This has awakened the youth's sense of compassion, which reflects in their leadership skills. At Amman Imman, we've noticed that once young people learn about the hardship of children from the Azawak, they readily spring into action. They mobilize others--classmates, relatives, community members--and create activities that aim to raise funds toward Amman Imman's cause.
