My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Brown County Humane Society, Brownwood, TX, USA
The people there are very friendly and educated about pet needs and animal welfare. They express so much appreciation for their volunteers; they make you feel like if you weren't there they wouldn't be able to function. It really makes being a volunteer worth-while in so many ways. I've been volunteering there on and off for a few years, as work allows, and it's always a fun (though sometimes dog-poop-covered) experience.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the decreased amount of shelter kills. They've worked hard to make their pets more adoptable, and make their shelter animals healthier. They are trying hard to work towards 100% no-kill, and they are getting there, slowly but surely.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
never have a minute to myself! They need more volunteers and more funding, or more money to hire more staff.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the people. For most of them, this isn't just a job, it is a way of life, and they put their hearts and souls into what they do...trying to make dogs, cats, even the occasional rooster feel comfortable, become adoptable.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
intelligent, friendly, compassionate and diligent.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
spay/neuter every cat and dog in Brown County, and become the no-kill shelter they want to be. They'd never have to put a dog to sleep because they didn't have enough money to treat it or euthanize a litter of puppies for want of space.
Ways to make it better...
the equipment was more modern. They don't have a lot of funding, so the computer is old, the printer is old, the offices are teeny-tiny, and the kennels need a lot of updating.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
the lack of funding and the lack of staff. They need to find funds to hire more people and get their equipment up-to-date.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I never would have though myself a cat person, and my husband never would have thought himself a dog person, were it not for our volunteer experiences at the animal shelter. Now, we don't know what we would do without our fuzzy friends!
