Review for The Freecycle Network, Tucson, AZ, USA

Rating: 1 stars

There is no need for freecycling to cost this kind of money. 99 percent of the workers are volunteers that have no idea what Mr. Beal is doing behind the scenes. There are so many freecycling communities out there that are doing so at no cost thanks to yahoo! There are also freecycling networks out there that the network owners donate their own time and money to run the networks. To see some of these networks there is a news oriented Web Site called http://www.thegreenumbrella.org .It will lead anyone looking into the freecycling world to so many groups that are running at no cost to anyone but the founders of the networks. These networks also provide lists of communities that are running for free on Yahoo! and other group providers. Yes, I was one of the first to see the route Mr. Beal was taking freecycling and left to start an alternate way to freecycle keeping it free and fun. Many followed as the years passed and I am sure more will continue to leave as the years continue. Freecycling should be just that FREE.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the first hand involvement from the beginning. I watched it grow from something wonderful into the MONSTER it is today. I tried from the beginning to keep it free to everyone with simple rules and no heavy handed below the belt tactics. No go, so I went!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

bring it back to the grassroots community it started out to be. Not make it my full time job to make money off of thousands of people working for free. I suppose it is a good way to may a living, but not the way I would choose to do so.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing freecycling grow into a worldwide regifting experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

both good and bad. To have a 3 person BOD with two being husband and wife and a friend of theirs is not a BOD in my eyes. The Mods that work their tails off to do the work that make a living for Mr. Beal are uninformed at best.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make Mr. Beal a millionaire off the backs of others. Freecycling would continue to be done for free by tens of thousands of people. It would be a travesty to Organizations that could really make a difference in peoples lives.

Ways to make it better...

others had listened earlier on and saw what was really happening behind their backs. Freecycling would have been kept free and not be fragmented as it is now.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

a family BOD of three. There is absolutely NO accountability to anyone. I don't see how this organization should be qualified for grant money from any corporation with any kind of stockholder responsibility.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I would like to see the org provide proof of the numbers they are claiming. They are just numbers picked from the sky. There is no way for them to prove membership, not tonnage kept from the landfills. Come on folks wake up and ask for proof of these #s.
