As an ARCE fellow this year, I can attest to this organization's vital role for the preservation of cultural heritage in Egypt. ARCE has supported and overseen, and still is, a number of major conservation projects in Cairo and elsewhere in the country. It facilitates fruitful collaborations between the Egyptian government, the Coptic Church, and foreign missions. Its archives house materials related to those projects, and they are a rich resource for historians of late antique and medieval Egypt. Moreover, ARCE's annual fellowship programs are superb. They give junior and senior scholars opportunities to do research productively in Egypt with the support of ARCE's very helpful staff who has got a lot of experience working in this country.
