Review for The Movement Theatre Company, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Highly professional, talented (98% are Ivy League or graduates of top tier performing arts schools i.e. NYU, Columbia, Julliard), energetic ensemble. Diverse multicultural artists who are committed to creating new stories for this generation. TMTC integrates relevant technology (Go Green - Paperless Reading Series) while incorporating educational elements (Hope Speaks) for youth. The members are on Film, TV and Broadway. For example, Christina Sajous was on the Grammy's the other week as part of American Idiot the Musical; Xosha Roquemore was a featured actress in Precious (the movie). BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR BINTOU, their mainstage production - the North American premiere of world-renowned playwright, Koffi Kwahule in June. I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Hope Speaks. The latest production featured at Harlem School of the Arts. I went there on the day of their free performance. There was a beautiful mural painted w/ help of the students. Production was professional from box office to the talk back.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

get the 5 executive board members a grant to have them paid for their efforts every week.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

PASSION. They are educated and fly. TMTC wants to create opportunities especially for underserved populations. Now is the time, in politics and the media and they are embracing their role by staying grounded, focused and enthusiastic

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Courteous and knowledgable. I could tell that they had their heads on straight and weren't zany kids with their heads in the clouds. TMTC staff is articulate, charming, and attractive. I knew I was in safe hands.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

revamp the face of theatre. TMTC could produce a Broadway show or have the means to be on the map with other companies and integrate to mainstream media like TV...something that would make theatre sexy again. I know they could...

Ways to make it better...

more people knew how dynamic these young people are...

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

audience outreach - i.e. they are catering to a young demographic that is bombarded by media images every second. How can TMTC stay relevant in the current stream of entertainment overflow?

One thing I'd also say is that...

They need to capitalize on their Niche. Emphasize that the mission is to create stories for multi-cultural people, but make sure that they are stating their inclusivity...not all members are Black/Latino/Asia...they welcome everyone!

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
