I had been wanting to read to kids for a long time and feel very lucky that I found The Reading Connection (TRC). I love TRC! They are so organized and their mission is so relevant and great. They encourage kids to read by sending volunteers to shelters to a) read books about various topics to kids, b) indulge them in activities on the related topics and c) provide books to kids of their choice to read on their own time. Joining the organization is fairly easy. The orientation I attended upon joining was pretty interactive and useful. All the volunteers and the Program Director, Stephanie Berman are so nice and helpful. Even the kids I have met and read to are so nice, eager to read and learn. I joined the organization in July 2014 and have had a great and rewarding experience thus far! I would highly recommend the organization to others! I hope they continue to grow and expand nationwide, especially to the West Coast. They allow volunteers to volunteer in the evenings such as 7pm, which makes it easy and convenient for full time workers.
