Having been diagnosed with AML twice in four years, receiving a stem cell transplant the second time, I can speak from my own terrible experience with leukemia. As with most people in the general population I used to think that cancer had to include some sort of tumor in one's body. Boy was I wrong! Leukemia is indeed a cancer albeit one within your blood. Essentially this cancer is destroying your blood cells. I have connected to so many victims over the past four years that have contracted the disease. Quite a few survived, but unfortunately some people that had so much to live for and perhaps give to society succumbed to it. Fortunately I have been able to make great progress in my recovery and, including my brother who provided me with his perfect match stem cells, I attribute this to the great physicians and hospitals that give so much of themselves in working to eradicate leukemia. But the defeat of the monster is far from victory. It depends on the continuous work of scientists and medical personnel. But this does realistically come with a price. It's hard to believe but the odds of someone you know, possibly a close relative, of becoming a victim of leukemia are high. There is no definite known cause or cure but with the continued and selfless volunteer work of Nancy Horne's "Jeffrey's Voice" and the dedicated actions of Laura Clark Koon, who has suffered the terrible loss of her young husband because of leukemia, there can be more survivors such as I that are fortunate to be able to encourage others to donate to the cause.
