Review for Wounded Warrior Project, Jacksonville, FL, USA
I retired from the US Army and the Army National Guard in April 2014 after more than 33 years of service. My last 20 years were on Active Duty and I served proudly striving to constantly take care of my Soldiers and to provide them the knowledge and skills they would need. I assumed that the Army would do the same for me as I came down to retirement, and I started the process more than a year in advance. But that was totally the case. Suffering from several medical issues, including 3 knee surgeries in the last 2 years of my career, plus diagnosed sleep apnea and some anger management issues I assumed that I would have some sort of exit physical at the end of my career. Every time I asked about it whether with the Army or with the VA VSO I either got, "they will take care of that when you out process" or "fill out these papers and send them in." Needless to say they didn't take care of me at outprocessing, and my paperwork was lost. Subsequently no exit physical or anything else.
My frustation built to a point, that when I saw an add for WWP, and knowing that I qualified as a member after my first knee injury I contacted them. I received my first phone call back within 24 hours and was told that Curtis Fluitt would be in touch with me the next day. Curtis Fluitt did call me the next day. I explained to him my situation, that I was almost completely retired, and very frustrated in the process of trying to find out about my VA benefits. After I detailed everything I had been thru he explained that since I was retiring before the determination process was complete it might take a little longer. I explained to him, at least someone told me something, and that I can handle that as long as someone is watching my 6. He assisted me in filing my claim, and just this week I received a note from the VA wondering where my outprocessing medical exam was. Surprise, it didn't happen but now they know, as I know and WWP knows I am due one and it will happen soon. I can't say enough about how well Curtis Fluitt has taken care of me, and has continued to stay in touch with me informing me of what I needed to do. As I told Curtis, I don't want a thing more than I am entitled to. Plus, there are Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines out there that have far more serious issues than I and they need to be taken care of first. I will wait my turn, I just want that turn, and thanks to Curtis Fluitt and WWP I am going to get it.
