Review for Horsepower Sanctuaries, Paso Robles, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Some of the things I enjoy about being out at Redwings include: handling different breeds of horses and different personalities in these horses. In past years I have witnessed several horse people who refer to themselves as "equine experts", but what I have witnessed while working at Redwings reveals individuals who are truly equine experts as they really know how to handle all of the horses they have, no matter how fearful the horses have become from their past life of mistreatment. Certain horses here have been subjected to severe abuse, and they have come to Redwings to learn there are people out there that truly do care about them and will no longer subject them to that life of abuse and lack of love and affection. Every volunteer is supervised and educated in how to handle these horses, and each volunteer is worked with for many hours with a staff member showing me even more how much these people really do care about the animals they provide care for. There is a high concern about the cleanliness and safety of the property for the animals and visitors alike. Every money that has been donated is put back into the betterment of the property or in the case of ill horses. The vet on hand is fast to respond if there is a sick horse and the staff never hesitates to spend the money to bring the vet in on needed situations. The staff is very educated and knowledgeable and is always willing to stay late with a sick horse and make sure their animals health is in their best interest.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the dedication the staff has for their animals. The hard work that is given to these animals to make their environment a happy and carefree place. The horses here did not have a previous life of love and attention they deserved and now they do.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

keep things the way they are.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the continuous amounts of knowledge about horses I have gained during my time spent at the sanctuary

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very horse-experience, most well-rounded in horsemanship. They are all very capable of doing their respective tasks and know exactly what needs to be done to care for the horses. Their main goal is to care for the horses and nothing else.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Buy more land and continue to grow. Plant more trees for windbreak. What is here is wonderful but it would be nice to see things grow. It would be nice to start a school with special hand-picked people that can help with horses that need behavioral help.

Ways to make it better...

i had been even more horse-knowledgeable then I already am.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

uninformed negative publicity.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I wish there was this kind of facility for abused women and children as they would have a much better chance pulling through the difficulties they are facing.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2010

Role:  Volunteer & I am a vet tech student that has been working on increasing my horse knowledge at Redwings for several months.
