Review for Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association, Alexandria, VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This Association serves musicians and music lovers from age 12 to the end of life through three orchestras and a free summer chamber music series.

The Washington Metropolitan Concert Orchestra for middle schoolers and older, gives members the opportunity to experience the joy of making "classical" music in a group and preparing for advanced orchestral challenges.

The Washington Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for high schoolers provides members the opportunity to perform the same music as a professional symphony orchestra in a nourishing environment where the emphasis is on music, mutual support and development.

The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic is a semi-professional symphony orchestra. Most members are volunteers. While marvelous music of the past is performed and honored, this orchestra focuses on performance of tonal music by living composers and past composers of the 20th century.

The weekly Summer Chamber Music Series provides performance opportunity for some of the regions most exciting professional and developing musicians.

All of this is accomplished on a very modest annual budget of less than $115,000.00. The Association and its programs provide an extraordinary gift to the community. The emphasis on nourishing performance environments and the challenges of new and exciting music enrich the lives of participating musicians and audiences. As a member of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts once said, "it provides the best bang for the buck in the metropolitan area."
