Review for Hooves & Paws Rescue of the Heartland, Glenwood, IA, USA

Rating: 2 stars

We called and emailed in response to a post on Facebook about a dog needing a home. The home visit went well and so we were shocked when we were denied the ability to foster and/or adopt this animal. We were denied because one of us belongs to an animal coalition and there is a conflict of interest between Hooves and Paws and another member of the coalition. We feel that this is very unfortunate as we are able and willing to provide a loving home for this animal. Yes we are very upset, but feel that this is factual and that it should be known.

Will you volunteer or donate to this organization?

We are happy to respond to this e-mail. Like "Most" Animal Rescues & Shelters we do home checks and place animals where we feel they will do well. When the Home Check was done by our Volunteers they brought to our attention concerns that we needed to address for the well being of the animal. Yes, there was a conflict of interest which we addressed with the potential adoptive home. There was also an issue with the number of animals already on the property, the space that was going to be provided for the animal to run and play in outside due to the fact that he is a 90 lb dog. There were cat feces covering the ground where the dog would be running and playing which is NOT acceptable. Because of all of these things combined we made the choice to deny the adoption. After speaking to one of the potential Adopters he stated that because he was denied he would be sharing negative things with others since they were denied as an adoptive home. I told him he had that right but it would be in his best interest to make sure he had all of his facts straight if he put anything in writing or verbally. So the post does not surprise us in the least. But this just confirms to us that we made the right choice to not place the animal in this home. We of course hope that we have no further issues with this family. But this is not unusual in Animal Rescue for people to get upset and retaliate when they are denied the right to adopt an animal. Again, we feel we made the right choice for the dog in question.
