Our family has been involved with the Guide Dogs of Texas since it first started. At that time, our son wanted a Doberman and we were expecting a new baby. So, he brought a 4-H newsletter to us and in it, there was a request for puppy walkers for the Guide Dogs. We agreed to let him try and have been volunteering on and off ever since. We have been puppy walkers four times, volunteer to prepare meals for clients, puppy sitter, one son was kennel manager for 7 years, etc. No matter which location, how small or large the facility, or who was on the staff, or who was volunteering, this organization works together to train the puppies to grow to be able to give independence and mobility to the clients who are chosen. Everyone has a common goal and cares greatly about the clients and the dogs. They make sure the puppies who don't make it as guide dogs end up as service dogs for other organizations or with a wonderful forever home. The funds they receive are used for the good of the organization and not wasted or spent frivolously. I can say honestly that I have received much more than I have given in volunteering for the Guide Dogs of Texas. May they continue to grow strong!
