I have been an AHS volunteer since 2009. I mostly volunteer at the South Mountain location with cats giving them love and attention while they wait for their forever homes and also assist potential adopters with finding the perfect feline to fit their lifestyle. It's hugely rewarding to meet a family who falls in love with a cat you've come to know and care about and see that cat leave the shelter to start the next chapter of his/her life.
I've also fostered underweight kittens. When you foster, you really get to know the animals and you are literally expanding the walls of the shelter allowing for more lives to be saved. Saying goodbye is always tough for me when it's time to take them back to the shelter to go up for adoption but knowing the time you spent fostering saved that kitten's life makes the experience so worth it.
In 2011, I went through docent training and learned all about the organization. Being entirely non-profit, AHS relies heavily on its volunteers and there are so many ways people can help, fostering, working directly with animals in the shelter, the hospital, in admissions, working with the public, going to events, working in the thrift stores or retail stores, etc. Over the years, I've done many things and all of them have left me feeling like what I'm doing is making a positive difference for animals served by AHS.
