My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Literacy Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
I volunteer with GPLC 3 times a week to tutor a an adult student in basic reading, writing and phonics, and also served in the past as a Literacy*AmeriCorps tutor, teaching ESL/ABE/GED. I'm able to plan my own curriculum and connect with my student on a personal level. Also, GPLC staff are really supportive-- so if you're new to adult education, they'll guide you through the process. There are lots of different volunteering options, depending on your interests. Overall, highly recommended!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
seeing how classes can affect my students and open up new worlds for them.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
connecting with people. People are the focus here, and rewards are on both ends; tutors and students learn from each other. My experiences here have reminded me how truly great people can be.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
awesome. They're responsible, really care about what they're doing, and are great educational resources when you're not sure how to proceed or are stuck in a tutoring slump.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
make a huge dent in illiteracy in Pittsburgh, and beyond.
