Review for Haiti Micah Project Inc, Alexandria, VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My church, through our peace & justice ministry, was looking for small organizations dealing effectively with extreme poverty in the Western Hemisphere, and learned about Haiti Micah Project. They are focused on street children in Mirebalais, Haiti who would otherwise not go to school or have any future. First through a feeding program associated with a local church school. They have expanded to help support many of the needs children have, including clothes, tuition, clean water, vocational training, and for some a residential dormitory. I eventually joined the board, and was very impressed with the desire to keep administrative as close to zero as possible. At the same time they have grown the services as well as the number of children served, especially after the 2010 earthquake drove many people out of Port au Prince. I am no longer on the board since I left the northern Virginia area where HMP is headquartered. You will not find a more dedicated group of people supporting the organization.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Hard to say. Eventually it will probably need some paid staff, but HMP has expanded its programs and its reach on a purely voluntary basis. It is diversifying its donor base, and working with other related organizations in the region. HMP keeps moving in a thoughtful direction.
