We were on an eye project in Cartagena, Colombia.
Our Medical Director asked 2 of us to pack up 200 reading glasses to take to Boca Chica, an island 25 minutes by boat off the coast. Upon arriving on the island, we set up our clinic under a thatched roofed community centre; we were surrounded by extreme poverty. Within minutes, hundreds of people, young & old, were lined up, waiting to have their vision tested.
Within a few hours, all 200 pairs of glasses had been fitted & several candidates for surgery were identified. They were so thankful, knowing their lives would be changed.
I often, now, think of those dear people on the island & know that a simple pair of reading glasses could allow them to read, to write, to make jewelry & clothing to sell & enable the elderly to cook & to clean.
We were told that the children had to stay home from school to care for the almost blind elderly family members. Now the children were free to go to school!!

Encourage all donors to go on a mission trip to experience first hand the difference their donations make in the lives of the less fortunate & how very grateful they are for our help.
