Review for The Wild Animal Sanctuary, Keenesburg, CO, USA
I first learned of this sanctuary 3 years ago when I heard the news story of the 25 Bolivian lions who had been rescued by Animal Defenders International and brought to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. I have been a passionate animal lover since I was a child and volunteer in African animal sanctuaries every year. I have seen lions in the wild and have worked with young lions in Africa so I was intrigued as to how the Bolivian lions would fare in Colorado. I decided that I had to find out for myself and made a trip to Denver (I live in Seattle) to see the lions. I fell in love the minute I set foot on the brilliantly thought out walkway which Pat Craig, the owner of the sanctuary, built for visitors to observe the animals. Like everything about this sanctuary, the walkway is designed with the welfare of the animals in mind. This is what true sanctuary is. Nothing is expected of any of the animals other than to "be." They are not obligated to entertain, they are not obligated to perform, they are not obligated to forage for food or engage with the visitors. These fortunate animals need only heal and recover from their former lives and enjoy their new life in paradise. That is what the Wild Animal Sanctuary is. It is paradise for those animals fortunate enough to find their way to Pat Craig. There are not enough superlative adjectives for me to explain what this place means to me. Nor enough words to praise Pat Craig and his people for their dedication. Since my first trip 3 years ago, I have visited 6 more times. I still live in Seattle but I gladly spend the money for airfare and a hotel just to be near these magnificent creatures for a few hours. What price do you put on an experience that cleanses your soul and lifts your spirits like nothing else can? The answer is whatever it takes to visit here as often as possible. Do yourself a huge favor. Spend a day in the company of these creatures. You will be a better person for it.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I wish they had an endless source of funds so that Pat would not have to work so hard and could rescue more animals. There are so many animals with such a great need.
