Review for Horsepower Sanctuaries, Paso Robles, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has been in existence since 1991. The organization was at the forefront of having a sanctuary vs. re-homing philosphy. At this time, Redwings takes in the horses that no one wants, and the ones that are abused and neglected. The horses are offered homes for the rest of thier lives. They have worked hard on making it a place for hope for the horses that need training so they can be cared for. The horses have special diets, many of them custom, something that isn't always done at other facilities. The horses have special mowed pastures that allow for the aged to have a chance to graze, without having to chew. Perhaps this is why the horses often live into thier 30's. People are welcomed to the public facility 10AM to 4PM every day but Sundays.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

More people know of Redwings and it's mission due to huge efforts to reach the whole nation on a regular basis. Thousands of mail pieces go out yearly to educate and prevent horse troubles, as well as support our operation.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I do run it, along with 5 other board members and a capable staff. I am proud of what we do with what we have. Our horses get the best we can offer, and those who need aid often can get some sort of help from Redwings

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The horses. They do not get all wound up in the human politics. I love working with volunteers, as often they are drawn to help the horses, and again, are not wound up in the politics of the world.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

99% fantastic people. Capable individuals doing the best they can with limited resources. All with the desire to keep the horses we have happy and to help others in need.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help so many other horses. Staff is important when caring for these large animals, so more staff would be great. Pastures would be of native grasses, and a goal of being like an educational national park would be closer to reality.

Ways to make it better...

Redwings was judged on it's actions, effect on the horse world, and care of its residents. If only people would understand that fundraising is a must with 90 horses, and...that the money spent on "administration" is actually directed towards horse care!.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Judgements made without knowledge.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Donors need to be critical when choosing to support an equine non-profit. How long has the organization existed, can you visit, will they provide materials to make your decision? Do they allow people to choose where to direct thier donation? Question...

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2010
