Review for California Technological Care, Rio Vista, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am a CTC volunteer and because of the time I put in into the organization, I was elected into the Board of Directors. I was lucky to get involved in one big shipment of used computers to the Philippines and observed first hand the reactions of the recipient children. The computers were donated by small and big companies in the Bay Area and refurbished in our Milpitas Center. We sent the computers to remote areas in the island of Luzon. I was in one of the team who went to a remote school in Batangas. We gave a set of 8 refurbished computers to the school and establish a computer center. The teachers were very appreciative of our effort and I was touched especially when they said that they teach the computer to the kids from the books and pictures they have but have never touch, seen or work on a real computer. The government does not have the money to supply the school even with one computer. It was just in their dreams but we are bringing that dream to them and to the school children. Some of the kids have tears in their eyes. This is one of the primary goal of CTC - our motto is to bridge the internet divide. Through the help of other volunteers and donors, CTC even in a small way will try to narrow that internet divide, provide opportunities especially to children where ever and when ever possible through our program of "computer centers for internet poor schools". God Bless our program.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

establishing a computer center and providing the computers and printer to the poor children in a remote school in Batangas, Philippines.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

still continue with our goal of establishing computer centers where ever we can make the difference. As of today, we have established over several hundred centers already in several countries.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the camaraderie among the volunteers especially when we refurbished the old computers in our Milpitas center. The volunteers don't get paid but they are happy and all enjoy the work with one thing on every ones mind - to help someone.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

I have worked with students from the bay area putting in their volunteer hours through CTC and learning about the computers to a Mayor in a big City in California, to highly paid Dentist, programmers, lawyer and even a priest.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

we could have done a million times more to help bridge the internet divide. We have gone to Afghanistan, to Mexico, to the Philippines, to the impoverished districts in Oakland, Fremont and Milpitas. We could spread out and make a difference.

Ways to make it better...

we tried to establish the computer centers with old computers - but the new computers are a lot cheaper now than years ago. If we can and get funds to buy new instead of refurbish old computers maybe a better way to go to establish our computer centers.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

is luck of funds. we need to get funds to operate a central office and warehouse so we can better serve our projects. We were able to get a two year donated warehouse from Cypress Semi-Conductor and we need more of this support.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the internet divide is growing. For those of us who are lucky to get the opportunity to be on the other side, we should try to strive to pull those on the other side of the divide to get accross the chasm that is growing. Let us give them a chance.
