Review for Journey of Hope Grief Support Center, Plano, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Among the moments that can forever shift the course of a child's life, none compare with the loss of a parent.

I have seen this firsthand in the lives of men whom I have mentored in prison. Many of them lost a parent as a child, and that tragedy -- which was rarely addressed professionally -- set them on a path that led to prison. While that tragedy does not excuse their crime, it does inform us about what contributed to it.

Far too many children in North Texas lose a parent each year, and Journey Of Hope has developed a powerful and scalable solution to address this challenge. I love how their model leverages the contributions of some remarkable volunteer facilitators to maximize the impact of donors' gifts.

I am proud to support this amazing organization.

This is an inspiring organization that brings light into lives that have been shrouded in far too much darkness. Their strong leadership is sincerely committed to their mission.

I served as a volunteer member of the Dallas Advisory Board from 2007 until 2012. I found the organization to be a remarkable change-agent in the lives of some of society's most broken lives, and always knew that my time, talent and treasure were invested well when I gave them to PEP.

Review for Central Dallas Ministries, Dallas, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

One of the most innovative and entrepreneurial social services organizations in the Southwest, CDM is leading the charge to shift the sector away from charity and towards sustainable change in the lives of our low-income neighbors.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the lives of its neighbors (i.e. clients), which have been forever changed by its combination of compassion to meet their basic needs, connection to opportunities to take care of their own lives and advocacy for changing the system around the lives of those who struggle with poverty.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the genuine connection to neighbors with a wealth of social capital but a lack of financial resources.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

compassionate advocates for those who struggle with poverty while also being innovative social entrepreneurs.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

leverage those funds many times over to not only deliver an extraordinary level of service in the community, but also develop sustainable improvements in the community's infrastructure in the form of affordable housing and economic development initiatives.

Ways to make it better...

more members of our community knew about CDM and supported its work.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

an overwhelming number of opportunities compared to the capital required to fund those initiatives.

One thing I'd also say is that...

there is no better place to invest your time, talents or treasure if you have any interest in making a difference in the lives of those who struggle with poverty.
