Review for Dogs Deserve Better, Inc., Smithfield, VA, USA
On February 12, 2013, I was able to get Tiger, a chained pit bull who had been abused and abandoned, through the help of a local police officer. Other neighbors and I had witnessed his abuse and neglect for a year, reporting it repeatedly, to no avail. We began providing food for him when he became emaciated. I have other animals, and was in no position financially to take on another dog, but felt compelled. I became aware of Dogs Deserve Better through online research, and when I saw that they awarded $300 grants for unchained dogs' veterinary care, I applied immediately, sending the information about his rescue and pictures of him I had taken during his time living in the mud on a chain, and after we brought him to our home. Very quickly I heard back, through a phone call. She had tried to reach me through email and since she had not had a response, she called personally to tell me Tiger was a recipient. The money was sent to our veterinarian that day. We felt like we had won the lottery!
Tiger is now living with my son, a combat veteran, and they have a mutual understanding of things others cannot comprehend. He is loved and valued. Without the help of Dogs Deserve Better, Tiger's veterinary care would be difficult. The $300 provided his vetting for a year, as well as heartworm and flea preventives. We are forever grateful.
