Review for El Teatro Campesino, Sn Jun Batsta, CA, USA
El Teatro Campesino has been producing original plays and performances for almost 50 years. Begun as a collaboration with the Farm Workers Movement and Cesar Chavez, El Teatro Campesino sets the standard for community theater. From free open-air productions, such as their exploration of the Mayan creation myth Popul Vuh, to the original plays by local and nationally known Latino authors and directors, to their renowned Christmas productions of La Virgen de Tepeyac and La Pastorela staged within the hallowed walls of Mission San Juan Bautista, they enrich the lives of thousands of people every year who otherwise would have no access to so many amazing works. Considering they base their work in the town of San Juan Bautista (population of only 1,700), the impact their art and their legacy has is amazing.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
find a way to provide them with enough funding so that they could produce more productions every year. This year (2014) will bring Luis Valdez's VALLEY OF THE HEART and the first part of POPUL VUH, finishing the year with La Virgen de Tepeyac. I would love to see more from them every year, but funding for the arts is not exactly easy to get!
