Review for Cambodian Children's Fund, Santa Monica, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My Dad had an epiphany. There has was, sitting on his comfy couch in Melbourne watching the Australia Story on the ABC one night when the phenomenal story of Scott Neeson and the CCF came on. It blew him away. The vision of those innocent children scouring the garbage dump - some of them suffering malnutrition due to their families' horrendous financial situation, and some in even more dire circumstances as they suffered various forms of abuse. He wanted to help, but he also wanted to make sure that this Scott Neeson bloke was the "real deal". And with that, he rang Scott up and arranged to go visit. That was in October 2012.

And guess what? He was the real deal, and even more. My Dad has said on many occasions that Scott is the closest things to a saint he has ever come across. He lives and breathes the CCF. They are housing, clothing, educating and feeding those children in need. For those parents who honestly wish to improve the welfare of their children, CCF provides them with the opportunity to "make good" on their bad debts (financially), and rebuild their pride in themselves. The promotion of a safe and stable family environment I think is key for some of these kids, and allows for the retention of history and traditions that you don't want to lose.

And here we are today. My Dad has been twice, and is arranging his 3rd visit this August. My brother has been twice, and will go for a third time this August. I've been once and will have my second visit this August. We are all sponsoring children. I email my sponsor child almost weekly - he is 12, and is relatively new to CCF. We had a skype chat a month or so ago. He is very focused on improving his English, and I encourage him every way I can. I am so excited to see him in August, and know his hand will be permanently glued to mine for the entire visit - just like the day I met him. I am so proud of him. He has become a member of our family and my kids and husband love hearing updates about what he is up to, and we love seeing photos of him and his family. I am taking my entire family (including my 6 year old and 3 year old kids) to visit next year.

CCF is real. The schools are there. The buildings are there. The teachers are there. The medical center is there. The occupational programs are there. The food program is there. You can visit, and get your hands dirty helping out. I did, and I never felt so good at the end of the day. It is amazing that in the midst of such extreme poverty, I actually found that the last thing I felt like doing was crying. I came out smiling. Smiling so hard my cheeks hurt at the end of the day. I imagine it must be just like those CCF kids - they have seriously got to be the happiest kids in the world!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

clone Scott Neeson. We need more people like him to replicate his CCF model around the world.
