My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Reef Environmental Education Foundation, Inc., Key Largo, FL, USA
I have contributed to REEF for many years, both money and time. I love this organization: the people (run by divers for divers), the mission (contribute data to a worldwide marine wildlife database, not knowing what we'll find), and the impact: > 300,000 surveys now in a publicly-accessible database that has led major advances in marine science and wildlife protection. In my local area, after sea star wasting disease hit the species especially hard, REEF data helped to get sunflower sea stars added to threatened lists by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and proposed for protection under the Endangered Species Act.

This is my favorite charity! I love the people and the mission: volunteer divers getting out and reporting the wildlife we see, providing a fantastic -- and free -- resource for tracking species over time. The database of surveys is now over a quarter-million worldwide.

I donate to many environmental charities, but REEF is my favorite. I have been a donor, volunteer, and occasional data analyst for many years with this organization. They are unique in their mission and the value they provide to knowledge and conservation of marine wildlife. The REEF database is now over 250,000 surveys strong, includes surveys conducted worldwide, and is such a powerful tool: it's been used for everything from conservation of Goliath groupers, to tracking the onset and recovery of Sea Star Wasting Disease, to helping recreational divers assess what they are likely to see at any given dive site. I cannot recommend REEF highly enough!

REEF is a tremendously effective organization in the focused areas of marine science and education. I've learned more through REEF classes and fishinars about my local underwater species and habitats than anywhere else. The knowledge base created and maintained by REEF is not only a helpful tool for scientists, it is also an excellent resource for divers in guiding dive site selection and expectations. I've been a REEF member for several years and have had universally positive experience with this organization, its staff and its volunteers.
