Review for Lords Pantry of Downingtown, Downingtown, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Lord's Pantry is the gold standard for food cupboards in southeast Pennsylvania.
With an all-volunteer staff, no one does more with their resources than LP.
Along with a large amount of food from all food groups they receive every month, clients are offered financial assistance with utility bills, school supplies, sneakers for their kids at back-to-school time, holiday meal kits, Christmas presents, and guidance for applying for government programs.
Veterans moving into the area after stays at the Coatesville VA are offered housewares, furniture and transportation to help them establish themselves in their new homes.
The staff changed their operating procedures when the Covid pandemic hit and has not reduced services at all.
On September 1, 2021, severe flooding occured in Downingtown and Coatesville from Hurricane Ida. Within days, the Pantry established itself as a leader in the recovery effort, paying for supplies to replace damaged electrical systems, paying for HVAC repairs and replacements, and providing dehumidifiers to flood victims. The Pantry also has been providing weekly groceries and hot meals to over 20 families displaced by the flood and staying in a local hotel.
For over 50 years the Lord's Pantry has risen to the challenge to help the needy in Downingtown, Lionville, and Exton areas. A global pandemic and historic flood can't keep them from fulfilling their mission.

The Lord's Pantry is so much more than an emergency food cupboard. Along with an overflowing shopping cart full of food each month, clients also are offered special distributions throughout the year, including household products, cold and flu care packages, Thanksgiving meals, Christmas meals and gifts, and back-to-school supplies; one-on-one counseling sessions to navigate through state and federal benefit and utility company bureaucracies; budgeting workshops; nutrition and cooking education; and health screenings by nursing students. All of this is completed by volunteers - no paid staff here. My wife and I have volunteered at the Pantry since 2004 and have loved every minute of it.

This is the most urgent time for feeding programs in the last 70 years. In this country of plenty, there are so many hungry people. The Lord's Pantry is the only Emergency Food Cupboard serving the Downingtown, Exton, and Lionville areas. They have served 3660 families to-date in 2009. The growth in need is out-paced only by the resolve of an all-volunteer staff, led by director, Jan Leaf. Clients are treated with respect and dignity; they are allowed to chooses foods they want rather that receiving a prepared bag or box of foods. The work done there is inspiring for those served and those serving.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the broad support of churches, service organizations, corporations, and individuals to serve our neighbors in need.
