My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for HopeKids, Scottsdale, AZ, USA
We benefit from a three events from this charity that went well. However, our experience with the next event was not what we would have ever expected and the manner in which administration handled it was even worse. We were at a baseball game and the HopeKids family sitting behind us spilled popcorn on the heads of our family. No big deal right, we were at a baseball game. Then, more popcorn through the air and onto us. Next, an entire drink was spilled on my sons head. They thought that was funny and laughed. I asked the parents to please keep caps on the kids' drinks to prevent us from getting spilled on again and suggested that instead of laughing, they should apologize. The dad took off, one of their kids went and grabbed some napkins for my son and another kept telling the parents to apologize to us. We moved a few rows up to avoid more spills. We received a condescending email from the secretary the next day insisting that we need to 'behave' at their events and just sit there if something like this happens. My husband and I have each worked in public service for nearly 20 years; we know how to professionally handle conflict. We escalated this situation to Jake, the owner and he said that he didn't want to hear any details; we were wrong. Are you kidding me?! There was not an attempt to figure out what happened or what should be done, just simply everyone was guilty and the other family that did the spilling was embarrassed. We had to leave this organization.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Create a Board of Directors and suggest employees receive additional education in communication and business skills. When we had a problem with the owner, we had no other option available to us. As a result, my daughter misses out on several opportunities that other disabled children received. HopeKids has the monopoly on this type of nonprofit, so we are simply out.
