Review for Haven for Hope, San Antonio, TX, USA
I came to Haven for Hope a recovering alcoholic/addict with a fresh felony and severe major depression. A year prior to coming to Haven for Hope I felt so hopeless with life that I hung myself. After 20 years of addiction and no self esteem, self pride or self confidence I flat gave up. I lived through my suicide attempt, spent 9 months locked up and came out with a fresh felony, none of the things that I just described helped me believe in myself one bit. I end up at Haven for Hope's intake office and meet with an intake specialist that listens to what I have to say, gives me her card so that I can call her if I need someone to talk to if I get depressed and offers me clothes and hygiene products and sends me to Prospects Court Yard. Prospects Court Yard is an emergency outdoor shelter that provides you minimum services but provides the necessities(food shelter and clothing). While I was there I did a daily chore in the morning and then stayed active the rest of the day. Did bad things happen in Prospect Yard? I am sure they did. Did I see them? No because I was to busy trying to get on with my life that I didn't stick around to see them. I did see a lot of people in there battling addiction and mental illness and sadly that was inspiration for me to take better care of myself. After 32 days I was admitted onto the Haven for Hope Transformational Campus where I received a case manager. This is one person that believed in me no matter if I believed in myself. She got me linked to private counseling that Haven for Hope has on campus and I started working on my depression, She got me a dental appointment at the Christian Dental clinic that is on Haven for Hope's campus. The dental alone helped boost my self esteem because I can smile again without embarrassment. I had a fresh felony so she helped enroll me in an on the job training program that helped me build references and honestly I felt like a human being again. She also got me linked to Alamo Colleges where I gained part time employment and made the honor role. I am 3 years and 8 months sober living in my own apartment and helping others with the same struggles I went through and all of that is with the help of Haven for Hope.
